Built in the boom years
Much of North Orange County was farmland until the late 1940s and 1950s, when tract homes went up street by street. A lot of those houses are still here: single-story, stucco, a front door on the street and a sliding glass door at the back.
They are good houses to screen. The three jobs we are asked about most are:
- A hinged security screen door for the front entry.
- A sliding security screen for the patio door, on its own track so it cannot be lifted out from outside.
- Fire-escape screens on bedroom windows, so they can stay open at night and still open from inside.
French doors get a matching pair, and if the dog needs to come and go, we can build in a pet door.
Older homes in the Anaheim Colony or downtown Fullerton need a lighter touch. The frame color can be chosen to suit the house, and the mesh looks like a tidy dark screen from the street. Historic districts often have rules about changes to the outside of a home, so check with your city first.

Cool the house at night, with the windows locked
Summer afternoons inland run warmer than at the beach. One of the simplest ways to cool a house is to open it up in the evening and let the air move through. A security screen lets you do that with the doors and windows locked.
